Leading Edge Competition Winners Design for Long Beach

Winners have been announced for the 2009/2010 Leading Edge Student Design Competition. The annual contest seeks to support and enhance the study of sustainable and energy-efficient building practices in architectural education.

This year, the competition focused on the coastal city of Long Beach, California. Students entering Challenge 1 (3rd-5th year undergraduate and graduate students), designed a zero-net energy Workforce Training Center. The winners of Challenge 1were Erin Chapman, Jason Klinker & Andrew Hesterman, of Ball State University.

Students entering Challenge 2 (students in their first two years of study), designed a zero-net energy Student Residence. The projects are located on adjacent sites on Long Beach Boulevard. Two tied Second Prizes were given in Challenge 2 instead of naming one First Prize winner. The two winners of Challenge 2 were Rudolph Marnich, Rob Yamnitz & Michael Yao of Cal Poly Pomona, and Cindy Wong of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
