Light up Your Life with the New Stickbulb Collection by RUX

You might say that RUX’s wide-ranging design practice runs from the sublime (a concept for floating bridges spanning the East River) to the more, perhaps, utilitarian (a prototype for a very 21st-century gum dispenser springs to mind). With the Stickbulb Collection of LED lights, now available to order, they’ve created something that is both.

As founder and principal Russell Greenberg tells the story, “RUX was designing a house in Miami that needed a large light installation in the foyer. At the same time, the production of another one of our projects was producing linear strips of wooden ‘waste’ that were piling up in our workshop. We challenged ourselves to make a light fixture out of the wooden scraps. Instead of developing a one-off installation with the sticks, we set out to design an elegant modular product, like a light-up erector set.”

The elegant new results of RUX’s experiment include the Bang Series, a group of three lights, ranging from a tabletop model just under three feet tall to a nine-foot tall floor-sized piece, all reminiscent of exploding fireworks and tree branches. The simple, elegant Torch Series—just a single, linear light—also comes in three sizes. All the lights emit a warm glow reminiscent of candles but without the flicker.

Besides looking fantastic, the Stickbulb Collection has some seriously eco-friendly cred. “Conservation of resources is at the heart of the Stickbulb collection,” says Greenberg. “We use responsibly sourced and reclaimed woods for the enclosures.” In practical terms, it means the pieces are constructed from sustainably harvested maple and pine, from Southern yellow pine reclaimed from construction sites in New York and Connecticut, and from ipe salvaged from the Coney Island and Atlantic City boardwalks.

On top of that, “We work with local manufacturers and craftsman for the minimal lamp components,” says Greenberg. “At RUX we are not only interested in designing innovative products, but we are also interested in developing elegant supply chains to produce those products.”
