Events: The Month Ahead from the AIA|LA

Disney Hall will be one of the stops on an architectural walking tour of Los Angeles, part of an event-packed October planned by the AIA|LA. Image via AIA|Los AngelesJust as the weather starts to get a bit cooler (we Angelenos have our fingers crossed that the cooling trend continues), it seems like the events calendar starts to heat up. In particular, our good friends at the AIA|LA have an action-packed fall planned with events and tours that will knock your socks off.

First up, there’s an amazing walking tour of downtown LA, presented in partnership between the AIA|LA and Ward Thompson, AIA, RIBA, of Entasis Architectural Tours, scheduled for October 13. The tour will feature three centuries of architecture that have influenced the development of our city,” says the AIA|LA’s Carlo Caccavale. “We want to defy the odds in a city driven by cars by showing projects that can only be fully studied and appreciated from a ‘walking’—what we might call ‘architectural exercise.’”

You’ll time-travel through the architectural history of Los Angeles visiting 19th-century sites such as the Bradbury Building and St. Vibiana’s. Twentieth-century stops will include everything from the Biltmore Hotel to the US Bank Building; the 21st century will feature the CalTrans headquarters and Disney Hall to name a couple. For your final destination of the tour, they have a visit planned to the under-construction Broad where Kevin Rice, from Diller Scofidio Renfro, will fill you in the design and construction background and share information on its completion status.

Moving from east to west, they’ve got another fabulous tour planned the following week—the Cal Coast Home Tour on October 20, where you’ll get an up-close opportunity to see three very different takes on the idea of modern beach living. “From Malibu to Santa Monica, we have selected three residential projects that represent edgy, sustainable design as well as smart solutions to the needs of the owners,” notes Caccavale. Included will be projects by Thane Roberts Architects, Peter Tolkin Architecture and Patrick Tighe Architecture.

Of course, the month’s marquee event might just be the 2013 AIA|LA Design Awards Ceremony at the Broad Stage at the Santa Monica Performing Arts Center on October 28. Our very own editor-in-chief, Alexi Drosu, will be co-presenting the awards, which will honor, among others, LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, artist James Turrell, Elena Manferdini, of SCI-Arc, and Michael Govan, CEO of LACMA. As Caccavale puts it, “The AIA|LA is promising a night of fun, networking opportunities and surprises.” So be sure to get your tickets—last year Moby appeared. Maybe there will be a surprise guest this time around.

Besides the tours and the awards, the organization has plenty of other great events planned for October. There’s another Small Firms Workshop and the AIA|LA Healthcare Committee will present the Healthcare Transformation Design & Construction Conference to name a few. Visit their Web site to learn more about upcoming events.
