For architects and designers, finding stylish LED fixtures still takes some work, but that’s changing, as more designers tackle that particular and fast-growing segment of the market. Add new pieces from David Alexander Lighting to the list. The latest collection from the company features work from the design duo of Applegate Tran Interiors (that’s Vernon Applegate and Gioi Tran), a San Francisco–based partnership known for its comfortable, colorful take on modernism.
Why the collection? According to Tran, “Because we are interior designers, we have to pay attention to lighting styles and technology, and we felt that there was a lack of LED lighting that is pleasing to the eye, simple and sexy.”
Clients can choose from 10 pieces at the moment, ranging from sconces to chandeliers that have a warm, modern feel and chic geometry. The sleek Radius pendant, for example, features a single length of housing a piece of cast-glass—it’s understated yet elegant. Massed bars of metal and glass compose the Parallel chandelier, available in four sizes (four, six, eight and 12 lights). The Obtuse II wall mount, on the other hand, has a vibrant dynamism, with its curve of cast-glass that appears to leap from the fixture.
“The glass was chosen for the quality of light generated with the LED technology and metals was selected as the base for the glass,” says Applegate. “Aesthetically, the integration of the thick-textured, formed glass and metals creates a juxtaposition of space and substance.”
“With our interior design work, we emphasize sophisticated simplicity and attention to shapes,” says Tran. “We wanted to translate that into this lighting line—simplicity in design with the emphasis on architectural shapes and forms.”
