On 10/10/10, Los Angeles played host to the first annual CicLAvia, where traffic was shut down along a 7 mile stretch to allow for walking, biking, skating and general enjoyment of LA's dominant feature: its streets. The event drew more than 100,000 participants.
CicLAvia is based on the Colombian event of Ciclovía, started over thirty years ago as a reaction against crowded and polluted city streets. Ciclovías encourage the use and appreciation of public space, and relief from the stress of traffic.
The event was put on by the City of Los Angeles, the LA County Bike Coalition, and the LA Metro.
