The 2013 AIA Gold Medal Goes to Thom Mayne

The Caltrans District 7 Building in Los Angeles. Image via The Architect's Newspaper.Los Angeles-based architect Thom Mayne, FAIA, is growing more accolade-rich every day, if you can believe it. The AIA announced last week that it will award Mayne the 2013 AIA Gold Medal at a ceremony at next year's AIA conference in Denver. According to the AIA announcement, the Gold Medal is awarded to "an individual whose significant body of work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture." The AIA cited Mayne's evolution from "rugged iconoclast" to "government works mainstay" and his work in establishing SCI-Arc as cause for the recognition. The 2012 AIA Gold Medal went to Steven Holl. Mayne can add his Gold medal to the mantle next to the Pritzker Prize he received in 2005.

The announcement follows shortly on the heals of the grand opening of Mayne's latest institutional project, the Perot Museum in Dallas, Texas
