Provocations: The Architecture and Design of Heatherwick Studio
February 20–May 24, 2015
This February, the Hammer Museum will present the West Coast debut of Provocations: The Architecture and Design of Heatherwick Studio, featuring the imaginative work of British designer Thomas Heatherwick and his London-based studio. Heatherwick is known for his unique design concepts ranging from products, such as a handbag for Longchamp, to large-scale structures like the new distillery for Bombay Sapphire Gin.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro Hypar Pavilion at Lincoln Center

Diller Scofidio + Renfro recently completed their latest project, Hypar Pavilion at New York City’s Lincoln Center. The pavilion is located in the center’s north plaza and houses a restaurant. The design consists of a twisted rooftop that in covered with grass, allowing visitors to climb up to use the space as a park. The rooftop measures 7,200 square feet and touches down to the ground on one end, where there are steps leading up. The restaurant inside holds 160 diners and 40 people at the bar with a long open kitchen plan. The intention of the project was to create a restaurant in the square that didn’t take away usable space for visitors looking to relax.

TRON-Inspired Chair by Dror Benshetrit for Cappellini

New York designer Dror Benshetrit has created this armchair for Walt Disney Signature and Italian design brand Cappellini, inspired by the forthcoming movie Tron: Legacy.

The piece is made of rotation-moulded plastic and is shaped to mimic the landscape of the film’s setting in a digital world. The chairs are are on show at Design Miami this week.

Shohei Shigematsu Discusses the Role of Financial Crises on Architecture

hohei Shigematsu, partner at OMA, talks about architecture in the financial crisis at U Laval in Canada. Basing his speech on research of how past financial crises have affected architecture in the past, he relates historical precedent to his current projects, including the Milstein Hall at Cornell and OMA’s winning entry for the extension of the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec (MNBAQ).

Foster + Partners To Design Apple's New Campus


         

Famed British Architects Foster + Partners are set to design technology giant Apple's new campus in Cupertino, California, according to Architecture Daily. The campus will focus on sustainability and the streamlined efficient workspaces typical of Foster, who has reportedly been in collaboration with head of Apple, Steve Jobs, for quite some time. Stay tuned for updates; the plan is sure to be representative of a match made in design heaven.
