Barton Myers: Works of Architecture and Urbanism
September 12–December 12, 2014
With works as varied as a Vidal Sassoon Salon from 1968, the U.S. Expo Pavilion in Seville, Spain in 1992, and his steel houses, this exhibit will present an overview of almost fifty years of architecture. Barton Myers first attracted attention in the late 1960s for his civic buildings and urban projects in Canada. He returned to the United States in 1984 to open a Los Angeles office and became known for his performing arts centers, campus buildings, and steel houses among many projects. 

The Barton Myers papers were donated to the Architecture and Design Collection of the AD&A Museum, UC Santa Barbara in 2000.  The archive covers Myers’s work from 1968 through 2002 and includes sketches and computer drawings, watercolors, images by well-known photographers, detailed study models and models of blocks-long sections of cities, as well as research notes, correspondence, lectures, and writings.

Los Angeles' EMERGENT wins competition for Shenyang Civic Sports Center and 2013 National Games

Image: EMERGENT Tom Wiscombe LLCLos Angeles-based design office EMERGENT Tom Wiscombe LLC wins competition for the Shenyang Civic Sports Center and 2013 National Games in Northeast China. The two interconnected buildings form a multi-story complex in downtown Shenyang where people can engage in sports indoors year-round. Galleries and restaurants make the space a community center as well as a sports center.

The architectural design is based on crystal patterns found in nature. Large ETFE bubble windows pressurized with air make up the opaque skin of the building, featuring solar panels on the roof.

Aura Lamp by French Design Team Océane Delain and Béatrice Durandard

The AURA lamp, created by French designers Océane Delain and Béatrice Durandard, combines age-old craftsmanship and modern technology. Strands of rattan are interwoven with flexible strips of LED lights during the weaving process, working them directly into the structure of the object. 

Aura won first price in the 'Adream' European architecture and design competition. The two French designers recieved a grant to further develop and manufacture the product. The first prototypes are on currently on display at Espace Saint-Valentin in Lausanne, Switzerland until March 13, 2011.

Green-Roofed Municipal Pools of Povoação, Portugal

Designed by Barbosa and Guimaraes Arquitectos, the Municipal Pools of Povoação in Portugal are housed in a series of basalt rock volumes cut into the side of the hill on a site that was formerly used by the city for outdoor sports. Inside, the building is naturally lit by skylights that pierce holes through the green roof and appear like plugs across the surface.
