FOG Design + Art Fair

Provocations: The Architecture and Design of Heatherwick Studio
February 20–May 24, 2015
This February, the Hammer Museum will present the West Coast debut of Provocations: The Architecture and Design of Heatherwick Studio, featuring the imaginative work of British designer Thomas Heatherwick and his London-based studio. Heatherwick is known for his unique design concepts ranging from products, such as a handbag for Longchamp, to large-scale structures like the new distillery for Bombay Sapphire Gin.

Green-Roofed Municipal Pools of Povoação, Portugal

Designed by Barbosa and Guimaraes Arquitectos, the Municipal Pools of Povoação in Portugal are housed in a series of basalt rock volumes cut into the side of the hill on a site that was formerly used by the city for outdoor sports. Inside, the building is naturally lit by skylights that pierce holes through the green roof and appear like plugs across the surface.

Sound-Absorbing Hexagon Panels by Form Us With Love


Swedish design studio Form Us With Love have created these Träullit hexagon sound-absorbing panels from wood wool cement. The designers described the process of making the wood wool cement panels as relatively simple. Wood slivers are cut from logs, then mixed with water and cement and put in a mould to dry into shape. The result is a material that is environmentally friendly, water resistant, moisture and sound absorbant.

The Inspiration for a New Eco-Housing Complex in Haiti: Coral 

Vincent Callebaut's newest concept for 1000 Haitian eco housing units, entitled Coral Reef, is inspired by the organic form of coral. Built upon seismic piers off the coast of the mainland, the prefabricated, modular units can be fit into a wave-like matrix as space is needed. Each family would have a plot of land to grow their own food, and their passive home would minimize energy usage, while renewable energy sources would make the entire project carbon neutral.
