Take Back the Streets of LA this Friday Sept. 17 for Park(ing) Day

PARK(ing) Day is a annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. The project began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. Since 2005, PARK(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement, with organizations and individuals (operating independently of Rebar but following an established set of guidelines) creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around the world. For LA, 2010 will mark the fourth year of participation.

San Francisco's Green Stadium for America's Cup

San Francisco just unveiled a plan to host the 34th America’s Cup yacht race with an ambitious green amphitheater set on the bay. Proposed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the plan is based on revitalizing abandoned piers between the Bay Bridge and the ballpark. In addition to renovating this part of the city, the project boasts an array of sustainable design features such as rainwater harvesting and a huge sail-like canopy covered in solar cells.

Colorful Lofts in Texas Fuse Art and Architecture

This is East Village Lofts in the Revitalization District of East 11th Street in Austin, Texas. The structure, designed by Bercy Chen Studio, makes a bold statement about the intersection of art and sustainability with a multifaceted facade of colorful steel panels. The panels, as you would imagine, double as a shade device and guardrails for condo balconies. 

East Village Lofts, or Block 19, was shortlisted in the Design for All competition held by Design Boom and Seoul Design Fair 2010.

Recycled Pallets-Material of the Moment : Palettenpavillon by Matthais Loebermann

The Palettenpavillon by Matthias Loebermann is a structure made entirely from shipping pallets, ground anchors, and tie rods. Designed to be easily assembled and dismantled, and then entirely recycled at a later date, the resulting building is intended as a temporary meeting place.
