2014 AIA|LA 2x8: EVOLVE Student Exhibition
April 11, 2014
2x8 is an annual exhibition sponsored by the AIA|LA, showcasing exemplary student work from architecture and design institutions throughout California. Each of the participating academic programs selects two projects that exemplify its core vision. The students’ design work will be judged by a noteworthy panel of architects and designers who will then announce the winners at the exhibition opening and convene in a forum to discuss the award-winning work.

Sonoma Living: Home Tours

AIA San Francisco and AIA Redwood Empire are excited to announce Sonoma Living: Home Tours, a new home tours program for 2014. Sonoma Living will showcase a wide variety of architectural styles, neighborhoods, and residences—all from the architect's point of view. The program provides design enthusiasts and the general public with an inside look into the world of distinctive residences in Sonoma county. Tour participants have the opportunity to see some of the area's latest residential projects from the inside out, meet design teams, explore housing trends, and discover design solutions that inspire unique Sonoma living.


Design for Social Impact
May 25–August 3, 2014
Based on the idea that design is a way of looking at the world with an eye for changing it, the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) presents Design for Social Impact, an original exhibition offering a look at how designers, engineers, students, professors, architects and social entrepreneurs use design to solve the problems of the 21st century.

Designing the Future: A Conversation with Richard Ong

As part of our on-going series of interviews with young architects and designers, we're bringing you a conversation with Richard Ong. Ong received his undergraduate degree in biology at Bowdoin college and is now at MIT, completing his M.Arch. This spring, a design of his—a bench—was included, along with other student work, in the Furniture Society's booth at ICFF. Not too shabby considering it's only the second piece of furniture he has designed. We're pleased to share his thoughts on biology, architecture and design.

Digital Water Pavilion in Zaragoza, Spain features Computer-Controlled Water Walls

 

MIT architects and engineers have designed an interactive structure made of digitally controlled water curtains. The Digital Water Pavilion is located at the site of the Expo Zaragoza 2008 in Zaragoza, Spain. The interactive water structure contains an exhibition area, a cafe and various public spaces.

MIT Researchers Invent Revolutionary Robotic Oil Skimmers

Researchers at MIT have invented a new robotic oil skimmer, called Seaswarm. Senseable City Lab is unveiling the first prototype at the Venice Architecture Biennale on Saturday. The hope's to produce a whole fleet of Seaswarms that'll be able to attack oil spills like a swarm of bees. A patented hydrophobic nanofabric devours as much as 20 times its own weight in oil without collecting water. To capture the oil, the nanofabric's draped over a conveyor belt that's then dispatched on the surface of the ocean like "a rolling carpet." The robot's entirely autonomous; it swims along, powered by a pair of solar panels.
