Barton Myers: Works of Architecture and Urbanism
September 12–December 12, 2014
With works as varied as a Vidal Sassoon Salon from 1968, the U.S. Expo Pavilion in Seville, Spain in 1992, and his steel houses, this exhibit will present an overview of almost fifty years of architecture. Barton Myers first attracted attention in the late 1960s for his civic buildings and urban projects in Canada. He returned to the United States in 1984 to open a Los Angeles office and became known for his performing arts centers, campus buildings, and steel houses among many projects. 

The Barton Myers papers were donated to the Architecture and Design Collection of the AD&A Museum, UC Santa Barbara in 2000.  The archive covers Myers’s work from 1968 through 2002 and includes sketches and computer drawings, watercolors, images by well-known photographers, detailed study models and models of blocks-long sections of cities, as well as research notes, correspondence, lectures, and writings.

The first-ever retrospective exhibition uncovering, examining and celebrating six decades of rich design history in West Hollywood. The curated ­­gallery will showcase design pioneers and present tastemakers through bold graphics, photographs and original product.

Scott Johnson’s Performative Skyscraper

Architect Scott Johnson is the founding design partner
of Johnson Fain, the Los Angeles design firm where he’s
been designing tall buildings for 30 years. In his new
book, Performative Skyscraper: Tall Building Design Now,
Johnson examines the creation of these buildings and
explains how technology allows them to respond
intelligently to climate, optimize the use of structural
materials and more sensitively reflect their cultural
sources. He’ll join us in the Studio for a presentation,
Q&A and book signing. Refreshments will be served.

EVENTS: Colorado Street Bridge Party

This Saturday, head to Pasadena for the Colorado Street Bridge Party—and meet Tavo Olmos, author of the Balcony Press publication The Colorado Street Bridge: Restoration Project Photographs, 1991-1993. On Saturday July 12th, from 6:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m, check out music, dancing, vintage cars, children’s activities, beverages and food. You can also find Balcony Press author Tavo Olmos there, who wrote The Colorado Street Bridge: Restoration Project Photographs, 1991-1993, who will be at the merchandise table from 6:30-7:30 to sign books.

Weekend Fun: Pasadena Heritage's Craftsman Weekend

This weekend, Friday October 19 through Sunday October 21, the Pasadena Heritage is hosting its 21st Annual Craftsman Weekend. The event will honor the group’s 35 years of historic preservation efforts by presenting bus and walking tours, receptions, lectures and workshops, a craftsman exposition, and the weekend’s signature event—the Historic Craftsman House Tour on Sunday October 21, which will feature docent-led tour of five privately-owned bungalows in Pasadena. Other tours will include jaunts to historic Glendora and the Historic Highlands and Madison Heights neighborhoods in Pasadena.
