SFMOMA Announces New Expansion Design

The Board of Trustees of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has rebooted the design concept of a forthcoming expansion in an attempt to bring the art to the people. Oslo- and New York-based firm Snøhetta has designed the new facility--local firms EHDD and Webcor will also help create the expansion. The new glass structure will increases public circulation between the museum and the city through the creation of free ground-level galleries, new entrances, a central public gathering place, two outdoor terraces, and a new sculpture garden. The new design also includes a mid-block, open-air, 18-foot-wide pedestrian promenade running from Howard Street through to Natoma Street, which is currently a dead end.
