Danish Architects to Design Prestige Project in Nigeria

The Danish firm of Henning Larsen Architects has won an international competition to design the Calabar International Conference Center in Nigeria. With hopes of gaining international recognition for Calabar as a meeting place for global events, the multi-use project will be constructed in the river delta of the Cross River State bordering Cameroon. Through working closely with consultants in Calabar, the project will be contribute to the development of Nigeria through attracting international conferences and tourists by providing a venue for concerts, exhibitions, and film festivals.
The building itself features panoramic views from its location at the top of a hill, and will consist of four separate buildings. The position of the building on the hill creates a natural amphitheater with views of the river delta, capable of seating several thousand people. The building also plans to utilize local materials and passive sustainability practices to minimize the environmental impact of construction. Henning Larsen Architects have previously worked in Africa and have designed several cultural and conference center, and their Calabar Conference center will continue their tradition of "design based on dialogue and dedication".
