A+D Museum Presents RETHINK LA

The Architecture and Design Museum will be hosting the Rethink LA Exhibit August 4 through September 4 to discuss the future of Los Angeles. Presentations will address current environmental issues while considering future options, goals and the role of sustainability in urban planning.

The event will focus on how to go about reworking Los Angeles and what steps can be taken to make for a brighter tomorrow. The exhibit will explore possible changes to the city as it calls upon individuals to reflect on what the future will look like, how we will get there, and whether or not a sustainable approach will be taken in developments.

BOOK: Dubuffet as Architect

In Dubuffet as Architect, former museum curator and director Daniel Abadie documents artist Jean Dubuffet’s ventures in art and design, giving readers a look into the initial development of his interest in architecture and the manifestation of his artistic abilities in three-dimensional form. The book sheds light for the first time on a somewhat undiscovered facet of Dubuffet’s work, apart from his history as a painter and the champion of “Art Brut.”

Lautner (1911-1994) Turns 100 Series

In honor of what would have been architect John Lautner's 100th birthday on July 16, 2011, The John Lautner Foundation and media sponsor FORM Magazine are presenting the John Lautner Turns 100 series from July 16-November 13, 2011. The series will reflect on and celebrate Lautner’s architectural ouvre while raising awareness about the continued preservation of each of his works. The events making up the series include exhibitions, film screenings, home tours, symposia, receptions and more.

John Lautner gained prominence studying under Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin. He is known for his respect for and celebration of the natural landscape surrounding each site, and his works, often dramatic and scenic, have been the setting for numerous films and features. Lautner was made a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 1970, and was honored with a Gold Medal for lifetime achievement in 1993 by AIA Los Angeles.

Events throughout the series will include a display at LACMA, a home tour of some of Lautner's most famous works, including the Schwimmer House and Jacobsen House, a gala at the Harpel House and more. For a full schedule of the events see the list on the John Lautner Foundation's events page.

The John Lautner Turns 100 series partners include FORM Magazine, the American Institute of Architects – Los Angeles Chapter, Getty Research Institute, LACMA, Los Angeles Conservancy, MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House, The American Cinematheque, and the Society of Architectural Historians. 

Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2011 Designed by Peter Zumthor

London's annual Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is constructed this year by Pritzker-prize winning Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. Each summer the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion commission acts as a showcase for the work of an international architect or design team who has not completed a building in England at the time of the Gallery’s invitation. Zumthor's pavilion will be the 11th since the commission's initiation. The theme of Zumthor's creation is hortus conclusus, featuring a garden designed by the Netherlands' Piet Oudolf.
