The Denver International Airport is getting a new look courtesy of architect Santiago Calatrava. The south terminal redevelopment program aims to enhance the airport's connectivity and functionality, with the addition of a signature rail bridge, a terminal train station, a 500-room Westin hotel and conference center and a multi-functional civic plaza, complete with retail shops and concessions.
The $650 million project, one of the largest in the country, will reveal a new narrow, concrete-and-steel building branching off of either side of the original terminal. The tall structure will dip into a deep V-shape in the center, allowing for a view to the iconic peaked fabric roof. A glass-and-steel canopy will cover the open-air train station, while the hotel will be defined by an undulating metal frame. By it's completion in 2016, the train will connect the airport with downtown Denver.
For more on Calatrava, visit FORM's website, where you can hear portions of publisher Ann Gray's exclusive interview with the architect about the stage sets he designed for the New York City Ballet.
