AUCTION: Fallingwater Blueprint and Frank Lloyd Wright Letter

Collectors and Frank Lloyd Wright aficionados brace yourself: a Frank Lloyd Wright letter and original blueprint from Fallingwater will be up at auction in June, from New Hampshire-based RR Auction. “These two documents…stand among the most important records of American architectural history,” says Bobby Livingston, vice president of RR Auction, in a written statement.

The two-paged typed letter, postmarked from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is dated August 29, 1936. In the letter, Wright expresses his frustration about the project: “I am willing to quit if I must but unwilling to go with my eyes open into the failure of my work— I have not built one hundred and ninety of the world’s important buildings without knowing the look of the thing when it turns up on the job.” Apparently Frank Llyod Wright also wasn’t shy about expressing the significance of his contributions to architecture.

But perhaps even better, also up for auction is an original 36 x 21 blueprint for Wright’s Fallingwater, titled “Guest Wing ‘Fallingwater’ Frank Lloyd Wright Architect.” The blueprint includes the caption: “showing distance from back wall at bridge to back wall of guest wing Scale ¼" = 1' – 0.” The reverse side of the blueprint also bears a pencil sketch, seemingly a portion of the upper right drawing on the blueprint.

The auction runs through 7 pm Easter Time on June 20.
