Tschappeler Winning Design for Center for Promotion of Science in New Belgrade

T
he Ministry of Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia called for international entries for their competition to design a new Center for Promotion of Science and Urban Development in New Belgrade. The winning design, by Austrian Wolfgang Tschappeler, was unanimously selected by the jury. Tschappeler's design calls for a raised building, with only pillars touching the ground, displaying the fundamental structural principles of scientific and technological development. Furthermore, through raising the building, the building will serve to promote--rather than block--vision and movement, and will allow for a generous outdoor space for discussion amongst the proposed Science Garden, as well as spaces for jogging and bike paths. The architects accentuated their desire to make entering and exploring the building an event within itself, as well as uphold the modernist tenants on which it was built. For more information on the design, visit Tschappeler's website here.
